The Bird Table
About a month ago I found a white activity table at one of my favorite thrift store haunts for $20. It was riddled with sharpie, nail polish, and glitter paint which resulted in the lower price. After using some magic eraser, rubbing alcohol, bleach and simply a lot of scrubbing, I was able to get most of the marks off the table, but not all of them. I decided to prime it up, paint it in some of the leftover paint from Noelle's room, and decoupage birds on it to go in our living room and replace another activity table. I painted the black lines on and then started picking some scrap-booking paper that would work for the birds and the eggs. I used Mod Podge as the decoupage medium before spraying the surface of the table with Krylon clear glaze spray and then the entire table with polyurethane.
I got my inspiration from Gale Kaseguma's Jelly Bean Tree which I had painted on the wall in my last house. My little girls loved the fun birds and the bright colors. Last week, I was sad to find out that Gale Kaseguma passed away last year from cancer. She was only in her thirties.

This Rocks!!! Soooooo cute!
ReplyDeleteLove that you got your inspiration from a children's book! Too cute! Can I ask what the benefit of the clear glaze spray is in-between the mod podge and poly?
ReplyDeleteRegarding the clear glaze, I was just trying to give the table as much durability on the surface as possible since if the glaze and polyurethane weren't thick enough, I am certain that I would have little fingernails picking and tearing my birds off the surface!! I had to put quite a few coats of each because I was still seeing places where the paper could be accessed.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to add that that Gale Kaseguma's Jelly Bean Tree is a painting, not a children's book although it would probably make for a great story! I loved all her work. Here is the link to her art.. http://www.kidmodern.com/prints2.html
